Message from APRU Secretary General

Dr Christopher Tremewan

President Sebastian Piñera, President of Chile and Chair of APEC Chile 2019, has announced the cancellation of APEC Leaders’ Week in November. This includes the APEC CEO Summit.

We regret to inform you that, in consultation with our APRU member and host of the APEC University Leaders' Forum, The University of Chile, we have therefore decided to cancel the event.

We wish to thank you for your commitment to the Forum and regret any inconvenience this cancellation may cause. It was due to be a signature event and we will work hard to provide a similar opportunity in the future.

We thank the University of Chile for its graciousness in hosting this Forum and for the considerable work preparing for it.

Please see a letter from Rector Ennio Vivaldi. Our thoughts are with him and The University of Chile as their community responds to the imperatives for “a fairer and more equal society.”

For more information, please contact, Jackie Agnello Wong, APRU Marketing and Business Development Manager, jackie.wong@apru.org.

About the
APEC University Leaders Forum

The APEC University Leaders’ Forum, organized by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the University of Chile, convenes presidents of the leading
Asia-Pacific research universities together with leaders from major global corporations and government to share insights and discuss the critical issues of the region alongside the 2019 APEC Chile CEO Summit.

The November 14th Forum will focus on the theme ‘Women in Digital Society’ drawn from the overarching theme for APEC Chile 2019. More specifically, it will discuss the role of women, how technologies can shape the future of work from a gender equality perspective and the predicted impact of technological developments on gender and society within the region.

APRU and the University of Chile are working closely with the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the APEC CEO Summit organizers.

About the APEC CEO Summit

The APEC CEO Summit is the Asia-Pacific´s most influential meeting of business and government leaders. Attendance is by invitation only.

The event provides unparalleled opportunities for global executives to strengthen their networks and engage in a direct dialogue with APEC Leaders, high level government officials and foremost business and thought leaders of the Asia Pacific region.

The two-day APEC CEO Summit 2019 program will inspire delegates to participate in stimulating conversations covering some of the most pressing challenges and questions facing one of the fastest growing regions of the world today.

The Venue

The University of Chile was founded on the 19th of November, 1842. It is the oldest higher education institution in Chile. Generating, developing, integrating and communicating knowledge in all the areas of knowledge and culture are the mission and basis of the activities of the University. This makes up the involvedness of their work and directs the education they impart.

Among the first Presidents are the founder, the Venezuelan humanist and jurist Andrés Bello (1843 – 1865), and the Polish scientist and mineralogist Ignacio Domeyko Ancuta (1867 – 1883).

The University is located in the capital city Santiago de Chile and it is a public university with international quality. All the areas of knowledge are elaborated in their lecture halls and today the university is at the top of the Chilean university system with regard to teaching, research, creation and outreach.

Chile will once again host the more than 200 APEC 2019 Forum meetings, which include working group meetings, workshops, committees of High Representative (SOM), Ministerial, Academic, Business meetings to finish in November with the Leaders Summit.

Being a host economy allows Chile to propose the priorities and deliverables that will guide the work of the main Asia-Pacific Economic Forum throughout the year.

The realization of an APEC year provides a unique opportunity to show the cultural, social and geographic wealth of the country to all the Forum members, considering that it will generate the visit of more than 15,000 representatives of member economies, observers, businessmen, and international press.

To the above, it is added the political and economic importance of hosting a Leaders Summit, in which world powers such as China and the United States participate, as well as Russia, Japan, Korea, Australia, and Canada, together with our Latin American partners Mexico and Peru, among other economies.
